What is Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a severe and chronic mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, perception and behavior. The American Psychiatric Association states that this disorder affects less than one percent of the population and some criteria for diagnosing schizophrenia as listed in DSM 5 includes delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech and diminished emotional response. To be diagnosed with schizophrenia two or more of the symptoms must be prevalent for at least a month or longer. Schizophrenia causes significant impairment in building social relationships beyond immediate family as well as finding work.
